A McHenry County man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after a driver was shot and seriously injured on Interstate 90 near O’Hare Airport.

The Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 1 arrested Aldo Ruiz, 22, of Wonder Lake, in connection with a recent expressway shooting investigation.

The Illinois State Police said they responded around 12:30 a.m. on July 12 to an expressway shooting on southbound Interstate 90 at East River Road in Chicago.

A male driver had been struck by gunfire and was transported by the Chicago Fire Department to an area hospital for treatment.

Troopers at the scene reported the victim was shot in the head and suffered life-threatening injuries. Multiple bullets had struck his vehicle.

The victim crashed into a semi-truck after being shot and another vehicle was also struck, ISP said. No other injuries were reported.

ISP agents identified Ruiz as a suspect in the shooting, which resulted in all southbound lanes being shut down for an investigation until around 4 a.m.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved one count of attempted first-degree murder, a Class X felony, against Ruiz.

Ruiz turned himself in to the state police on Wednesday and he was transported to the Cook County Jail.

ISP said Ruiz’s arrest was one of two separate expressway shooting investigations that led to charges this week.

Agents also charged Lamarkcus R. Ferguson, 36, of Country Club Hills, in connection with another shooting that occurred on July 9.

Troopers responded to an expressway shooting on northbound Interstate 94 at 47th Street in Chicago. ​

They found two victims who had been struck by gunfire and were transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The Country Club Hills Police Department took Ferguson into custody during a traffic stop.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved five counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and five counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Court records show the state’s attorney’s office filed a petition to detain Ruiz pending trial and a judge granted the request on Thursday.

Ruiz is scheduled to appear in court again on Wednesday for a status hearing.
