A driver was assisted out of the water and transported to the hospital after a large dump truck traveled off the road into a pond at a landfill in Zion.

The Zion Fire Rescue Department responded around 12:42 p.m. Wednesday to GFL Zion Landfill, 701 North Green Bay Road in Zion, for a report of a vehicle crash.

A 911 caller reported that a truck had gone into a pond on the property while a person was inside the truck.

The man was reported to be out of the truck but on top of the vehicle, which was partially submerged in the water, according to fire department radio traffic.

Fire crews arrived and confirmed a person was still on top of the vehicle in the pond.

The person was assisted from the water and brought to land, fire officials said.

Fire officials said the man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and an ambulance transported him to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.

The incident occurred on the far east side of the landfill property bordering Kenosha Road north of 9th Street.

It is unknown what led to the dump truck, which was hauling dirt, to end up in the water.
