Two people were hospitalized after a three-vehicle crash involving an electric vehicle and a semi-truck on Route 23 near Marengo Sunday morning, fire officials said.

The Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts responded around 10:50 a.m. Sunday to the 3800 block of North Route 23 in unincorporated Marengo for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Fire crews arrived to find a three-vehicle crash with moderate to heavy damage south of River Road on Route 23, according to Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said.

The vehicles were spread across approximately 1,200 feet on Route 23.

Emergency personnel initiated a patient assessment and determined that eight people were involved.

Vucha said the incident was upgraded to bring additional ambulances from the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District, Harvard Fire Protection District and Huntley Fire Protection District.

Two occupants from a dark-colored Tesla sedan were transported to the hospital with moderate, non-life-threatening injuries.

Vucha said five people from a red minivan were evaluated but declined transport to the hospital.

The male driver of the third vehicle, a semi-truck, declined any evaluation or transport to the hospital.

Route 23 was shut down in both directions for over an hour while emergency crews worked at the scene.

“The Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts would like to thank the Hampshire Fire Protection District for providing change of quarters coverage, as well as Boone County District 2 and Union Fire Protection District for handling additional calls during this incident,” Vucha said.

“We also extend our appreciation to the Marengo Police Department and our dispatchers for their assistance and support throughout the response,” Vucha added.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the crash.
