A SWAT team arrested two suspects, one wanted for murder and the other wanted for attempted murder, after they were found in an apartment with guns in Zion Monday afternoon.

Zion Police Department Lt. Derek Zaloudek told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that a coordinated law enforcement operation occurred and led to two people being taken into custody on serious felony charges.

20-year-old Darris Bonner was wanted on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm in connection with the March 2024 shooting death of Jamaris Smith.

27-year-old Jasmine Piggs was wanted for attempted first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm related to a separate shooting in Waukegan.

Detectives assigned to the Zion Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit developed credible information on Monday that Bonner was inside an apartment in the 2100 block of Hebron Avenue in Zion, Zaloudek said.

The Zion Police Department worked with the Waukegan Police Department’s Community Crimes Division and learned that Piggs was also suspected to be inside the Hebron Avenue residence.

The Northern Illinois Police Alarm System’s Emergency Services Team (NIPAS EST) was activated and was seen responding through Lake County to the residence late in the afternoon on Monday.

NIPAS EST, along with detectives from the Waukegan Police Department’s Community Crimes Division, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office’s Special Investigations Group, the Zion Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit and the Zion Police Department’s Tactical Response Team, converged on the residence near 21st Street and Hebron Avenue around 5 p.m.

Police worked to facilitate the surrender of Bonner and Piggs and successfully took them into custody, Zaloudek said.
