A fire caused significant damage to a vacant apartment and left all four units of the building uninhabitable in Highland Park Thursday evening, fire officials said.
The Highland Park Fire Department responded around 8:10 p.m. Thursday to the 300 block of Central Avenue in Highland Park for a report of a structure fire.
A 911 caller reported seeing flames coming from the rear of the apartment building, according to Highland Park Fire Chief Joe Schrage.
Firefighters arrived within three minutes and found flames coming from a window and upgraded the incident to a confirmed fire response for additional resources.
A 100-year-old woman was reported to be inside the building and police and fire crews began searching for her.
Schrage said it was determined she was not there and all other residents were able to self-evacuate before the fire department arrived.
Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and conduct searches in approximately 20 minutes.
The fire was contained to one unit, which sustained significant damage, Schrage said.
The other three units of the four-unit building were also deemed uninhabitable due to smoke damage.
None of the displaced residents required assistance from the American Red Cross and all of them found alternative arrangements.
Schrage said the fire originated in the kitchen of the unit, which was vacant, and the cause of the fire is undetermined so far.
Approximately $150,000 in damage was estimated.
No injuries were reported to any firefighters or residents, Schrage said.
The Buffalo Grove, Countryside, Deerfield-Bannockburn, Glenview, Lake Forest, Libertyville, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Long Grove, Northbrook, Northfield, Skokie and Winnetka fire departments were called to assist at the scene and cover calls in Highland Park.
