A second suspect has been convicted after prosecutors say they stole a sheriff’s deputy’s badge, an AR-style rifle, jewelry and thousands of dollars in cash during a burglary at a home near Marengo.
Scott T. Henrie, 36, of Janesville, Wisconsin, and Sean A. Fitzpatrick, 49, of Poplar Grove, were initially charged in April 2023 with residential burglary, theft from motor vehicle, aggravated unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, unlawful possession of three or more stolen vehicles and theft over $100,000.
A grand jury later additionally charged the two with possession of a stolen firearm. Fitzpatrick was also charged with felon in possession of a firearm.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court said Henrie and Fitzpatrick committed a residential burglary sometime on March 28, 2023, or March 29, 2023, in the 19000 block of Kishwaukee Valley Road in unincorporated Marengo.
The two unlawfully entered the residence with the intent to commit a theft, the complaint said.
Henrie and Fitzpatrick stole a silver 2015 Ford F-250 pickup, which had a red Western snowplow on it, the complaint said.
They also allegedly stole a white 2022 Lexus LS 500 sedan, which had a base MSRP of $76,100.
A separate criminal complaint said Henrie and Fitzpatrick stole a 2018 John Deere Gator TS 4×2 along with an Imperial Trailer flatbed double axel trailer from the same victim.
A grand jury indictment said that a Rock River Arms AR-style rifle, a Cook County sheriff’s deputy’s badge, jewelry and $5,000 in cash were also taken during the burglary.
The indictment said Henrie and Fitzpatrick additionally stole a Bosch washer and dryer, along with two flatscreen televisions and clothing from the home.
The combined value of the stolen property is between $100,000 and $500,000, the indictment said.
The case was investigated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
The two suspects were arrested and transported to the McHenry County Jail on April 3, 2023.
Court records show a three-day jury trial began earlier this week in Fitzpatrick’s case and the jury returned a guilty verdict on the charges of residential burglary, theft over $100,000, unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle, aggravated possession of stolen motor vehicles, possession of a stolen firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.
Prosecutors said during the trial that Henrie and Fitzpatrick burglarized the residence over the span of two days.
The two facilitated the burglary by stealing the homeowner’s truck, loading the affixed trailer with a John Deere Gator, snowplow and many other items from inside the residence, proseuctors said.
The stolen property was transported to Fitzpatrick’s home where it was recovered by the sheriff’s office.
Court records show Henrie entered into a negotiated plea deal in August 2024 by pleading guilty to residential burglary, a Class 1 felony, in exchange for a four-year sentence in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 25 for Fitzpatrick.
