One of two men has been sentenced to probation after they attempted to carjack a victim while armed with guns at a Round Lake Beach grocery store and fled from responding officers.
Caden Ziccarelli, 20, of Kenosha, Wisconsin, was charged in March 2024 with one count of attempted aggravated vehicular hijacking, four counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and one count of resisting arrest.
Timothy Reed, 22, of Kenosha, Wisconsin, was charged in March 2024 with one count of attempted aggravated vehicular hijacking and three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
The Round Lake Beach Police Department responded at 12:45 p.m. on March 7, 2024, to Tony’s Fresh Market, 965 East Rollins Road in Round Lake Beach, for a report of an attempted carjacking.
Reed went up to a victim sitting in their car and demanded their car keys while displaying a handgun in his waistband, Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Vukovich said.
Ziccarelli was with Reed during the attempted carjacking.
The victim refused to give over the keys and went into Tony’s Fresh Market to report what had happened to an employee.
Then-Round Lake Beach Police Chief Wayne Wilde Jr. said both men’s descriptions were provided to responding officers.
Ziccarelli and Reed fled on foot through several parking lots and into a nearby wooded area while officers were responding.
Police checked the immediate area but could not locate the pair, Wilde said.
At 2:08 p.m. later that day, a Round Lake Beach police officer on patrol spotted both men walking up and down the parking aisles at Meijer, 750 East Rollins Road in Round Lake Beach.
The officer attempted to stop them but they fled on foot across the nearby railroad tracks, Wilde said.
Police gave chase and Reed got down on his knees and was arrested.
A Taurus handgun with six rounds in the magazine was recovered from Reed. Ziccarelli disobeyed officers’ commands to stop.
During the apprehension, Ziccarelli’s FN handgun with 14 rounds in the magazine flew and hit an officer in the face, Vukovich said.
The officer suffered a cut on his hand and pain in his knee.
Wilde said the officer refused treatment by medical personnel on the scene.
The victim from the incident positively identified Ziccarelli and Reed as the attempted carjackers, Wilde said.
Both men did not have valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) cards or concealed carry licenses.
Court records show Reed pleaded guilty to one count of attempted aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, a Class 1 felony.
He was sentenced on June 26 to 48 months of probation and ordered not to possess weapons.
Reed was also ordered not to consume illegal drugs or alcohol and to be subject to random testing.
Court records show the case against Ziccarelli is closed after he pleaded guilty in May 2024 to aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, a Class 4 felony, in exchange for the rest of his charges being dismissed.
He was sentenced to 18 months of probation and 50 hours of public service as part of the plea deal.
