Firefighters rescued two cats that were found inside an apartment that caught on fire and left residents displaced in Crystal Lake Saturday evening, fire officials said.
The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded around 9 p.m. Saturday to the Skyridge Club Apartments in the 1500 block of Skyridge Drive in Crystal Lake for an activated fire alarm.
Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department Battalion Chief Brian Tamason said fire crews arrived to the alarm and found a multi-family residential building with no smoke or flames showing.
The building was being evacuated and firefighters began investigating.
They noticed smoke inside and an activated sprinkler within one of the apartments, Tamason said.
The incident was upgraded to a working fire to bring additional fire department resources to the scene.
Firefighters quickly located and extinguished the fire in the apartment. The fire was under control at 9:17 p.m.
Tamason said the fire damage was isolated to the apartment where it originated.
It is unclear whether any other units were left uninhabitable due to smoke or water damage.
Firefighters rescued two cats from the unit where the fire occurred, Tamason said. Both cats were healthy, uninjured and reunited with their owners.
No residents or firefighters were injured. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Huntley, McHenry Township and Nunda Rural fire districts assisted.
