A resident was awoken by their smoke alarms after a fire broke out and caused damage to their home’s garage in Winthrop Harbor Tuesday morning.
The Winthrop Harbor Fire Department and Zion Fire Department responded around 4:10 a.m. Tuesday to the 700 block of Roberts Road in Winthrop Harbor for a report of a structure fire.
Firefighters arrived and found heavy smoke coming from the attached garage of a house, fire officials said.
The incident was upgraded to a Working Still Alarm to bring additional resources to the scene.
The Newport, Gurnee, Pleasant Prairie and Beach Park fire departments responded to the scene.
Fire crews pulled a hose line and quickly extinguished the fire before it could extend into the living area of the home, fire officials said.
The home’s occupant was awoken by working smoke detectors, which allowed for a safe evacuation.
Winthrop Harbor Fire Chief Rocco Campanella said the residents were not displaced and the home remains habitable.
“We believe we got there just in time and minimized any major loss to the garage besides the contents and insulation,” Campanella said.
Fire crews remained at the scene for approximately an hour and a half.
The Winthrop Harbor Fire Department said it stresses the importance of working smoke detectors in every building.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation but it is not believed to be suspicious.
