A fire destroyed a camper trailer and spread to a large garage, sending flames through the roof, and prompting a large fire department response in Wadsworth.
The Newport Fire Protection District responded around 10:36 p.m. Sunday to the 15900 block of West Wadsworth Road in Wadsworth for a report of a structure fire.
Multiple 911 calls were received for a structure fire that was spreading to another structure.
The incident was upgraded to a Working Still Alarm to bring additional fire department resources to the scene.
Newport Township Fire Protection District Fire Prevention Officer Trudy Maatta said firefighters arrived and reported finding a camper trailer that was fully engulfed in flames.
The fire was spreading to a three to four-car garage, which was directly next to the trailer.
Maatta said the incident was then upgraded again through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) to the box alarm level for more fire departments to respond.
The area where the fire occurred does not have fire hydrants and rural water operations were established with firefighters hauling water to the scene with tender trucks.
Wadsworth Road was completely shut down in both directions from Route 41 to Dilleys Road for several hours.
Maatta said both structures were significantly damaged, with the trailer a total loss and the garage possibly a total loss — a determination the insurance company will make.
The garage was for maintenance purposes and contained items such as propane and lawnmowers.
The person who lived on the property was not there at the time of the fire, Maatta said. The home was not damaged.
No injuries were reported to any firefighters and no animals were involved.
Fire crews left the scene by around 3:15 a.m., more than four and a half hours after the incident began.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Newport Fire Protection District.
