Prosecutors say a man repeatedly punched a woman in the face, causing her to lose consciousness, and then cut another woman with a knife before running over the first victim with his car in North Chicago.

The North Chicago Police Department responded around 3:32 a.m. on July 18 to the 1100 block of Broadway Avenue for a report of a fight in progress.

Officers arrived and found the suspect, Juan C. Mascorro, 24, of Zion, in his vehicle attempting to leave the area.

Officers spoke with the primary victim, who stated that she used to date Mascorro, according to Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Emily Shanley-Roberts.

Mascorro told officers that he brought his new girlfriend and a friend to his former girlfriend’s home for a party.

Mascorro’s new girlfriend and former girlfriend got into a verbal altercation and shoving ensued.

Mascorro got pushed by someone during the shoving, Shanley-Roberts said.

A witness who was not involved, along with the victims, said that Mascorro became upset and started shoving his former girlfriend, who pushed him back.

Mascorro then punched his former girlfriend in the face with a closed fist and she fell to the ground and lost consciousness, Shanley-Roberts said.

The victim regained consciousness and got back up. Shanley-Roberts said Mascorro then punched the victim’s cousin in the face with a closed fist.

The former girlfriend tried to stop Mascorro but he punched her in the face two to four more times, Shanley-Roberts said.

The victim’s cousin tried to intervene and was allegedly punched again by Mascorro.

The cousin pulled a knife after she was punched and Mascorro grabbed the knife away from her and cut her hand in the process, Shanley-Roberts said.

One of the friends of Mascorro’s former girlfriend attempted to intervene and Mascorro punched her in the left shoulder multiple times, leaving significant bruising and serious pain, Shanley-Roberts said.

The incident occurred behind the apartment complex and the victims began walking towards the front to get away from Mascorro.

Shanley-Roberts said Mascorro got into his car and drove at his former girlfriend.

She was almost able to get out of the water but he ended up running over her foot with his car.

Mascorro stopped his vehicle in the middle of the street and got out of his car, at which time officers arrived.

The primary victim had bruising to her right cheek, left eye, right eye, nose and various abrasions, Shanley-Roberts said.

Mascorro was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, two counts of domestic battery and two counts of battery.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain him pending trial and Lake County Judge Michael Nerheim granted the request.

Mascorro was on probation at the time of his arrest for aggravated unlawful use of a firearm, an offense that occurred in July 2024 in Waukegan. He pleaded guilty in the case in September.

Mascorro remains held in the Lake County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court again on August 12 to be arraigned on the charges.
