A firefighter was hospitalized while battling a fire that caused significant damage to part of Timeout Sports Pub in Winthrop Harbor Saturday afternoon, fire officials said.

The Winthrop Harbor Fire Department and Winthrop Harbor Police Department responded around 12:30 p.m. Saturday to Timeout Sports Pub, 1706 7th Street in Winthrop Harbor, for a report of a structure fire.

Officers arrived and found part of the roof engulfed in flames with workers trying to extinguish it with a hose.

Fire crews arrived and confirmed an active fire coming from the roof of the building, fire officials said.

The sports bar was evacuated as well as neighboring businesses.

A Working Still Alarm was requested, bringing assistance from neighboring fire departments to aid in extinguishment efforts, fire officials said.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the roof area but the east dining area sustained significant smoke and water damage.

Fire officials say the fire began during roofing work and the cause is under investigation.

A firefighter was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of heat exhaustion.

No civilian injuries were reported. A damage estimate was not immediately available.

The Beach Park Fire Department, Newport Township Fire Protection District, Zion Fire Rescue Department and Pleasant Prairie Fire and Rescue Department assisted at the scene.

The North Chicago Fire Department and Libertyville Fire Department covered Winthrop Harbor’s fire station during the incident.
