One person was injured and a dog was rescued after a fire left a townhome with significant damage and damaged a second townhome in Lake in the Hills Wednesday evening.
The Huntley Fire Protection District responded around 5:38 p.m. Wednesday to the 2200 block of Daybreak Drive in Lake in the Hills for a report of a structure fire.
Firefighters arrived within minutes and found smoke coming from the roof of the end unit in a row of townhouses, fire officials said.
A walk-around of the building showed heavy fire coming from the back of the home.
The fire had started spreading to the second floor and attic and the incident was upgraded to bring additional resources to the scene.
It was initially unknown whether anyone was still inside.
Firefighters began a search before soon confirming that all occupants had made it out safely.
Fire crews worked quickly to extinguish the fire and keep it from spreading to neighboring homes.
A significant amount of overhaul was needed to locate and extinguish residual hot spots, also known as hidden fires, fire officials said.
The affected unit sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage. The contents are considered a total loss.
Firefighters forced entry to search a neighboring townhome unit for fire extension and rescued a dog.
“Thanks to their quick work, any fire spread was stopped, and the adjoining home was left with only light smoke damage,” fire officials said.
Two adults and two children were displaced from the home that caught fire.
One person was evaluated by paramedics at the scene for minor burn injuries.
The fire is believed to have begun at the rear of the home but the exact cause remains under investigation by the Huntley Fire Protection District.
“We appreciate the assistance of all the responding agencies and our change of quarters companies, and our dispatchers and Lake in the Hills Police for their support during the incident,” the fire district said.
