Residents have been displaced after a fire possibly started near an electric UTV damaged a garage and a house in Hawthorn Woods early Saturday morning.

The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department responded around 12:26 a.m. Saturday to the first block of Barberry Drive in Hawthorn Woods for a report of a structure fire.

A 911 caller reported their garage was on fire and they were trying to extinguish it.

Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department Chief David Pilgard said the resident was alerted by the smell of smoke and then the smoke detectors activated shortly after.

Fire crews arrived in four minutes to find a two-story house with smoke showing.

Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department Lt. Jason Henricksen was first on the scene and requested an upgraded response to the working fire level to bring additional resources to the scene.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within 10 minutes of arrival, Pilgard said.

The fire is suspected to have started in the garage by an electric UTV, which was on a charger. Investigators are looking into it further.

The fire did not extend into the home from the garage but the inside of the home sustained smoke damage.

The house is uninhabitable until the smoke damage can be mitigated. A board-up company was called to the scene.

No injuries were reported to any pets, residents or firefighters during the incident, Pilgard said.

Vehicles inside the garage were able to be pulled out and were not seriously damaged.

Pilgard said all residents should make sure they have working smoke detectors in their homes.
