Police say they arrested a suspect, who has since been released, after receiving a report of a possible child abduction attempt at a park in Marengo Saturday afternoon.
The Marengo Police Department responded around 12:50 p.m. Saturday to Indian Oaks Park, 825 Indian Oaks Trail in Marengo.
Marengo Police Department Sgt. Andrew Kjellgren said the initial call reported a possible child abduction attempt.
The suspect made “alarming statements” referencing children but did not physically attempt to abduct a child, Kjellgren said.
Officers were able to gather information that identified the possible suspect.
He was described as a male white driving a black two-door Mercedes-Benz, Kjellgren said. A license plate was also obtained.
The Marengo Police Department received a road rage incident report around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Kjellgren said.
The complainant went to the police station while being followed by a person in a black Mercedes-Benz coupe.
The license plate matched the earlier report of the suspect in the incident at Indian Oaks Trail.
Kjellgren said the Mercedes was located stopped near a gas pump at the Casey’s Gas Station, 200 East Grant Highway in Marengo.
Officers attempted to perform a high-risk traffic stop on the vehicle due to the severity of the criminal activity reported.
The driver did not comply with commands to shut the car off or show his hands, Kjellgren said.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist and the driver eventually stepped out of the car and was taken into custody.
The driver was transported to a local hospital for an evaluation.
He was identified as Brandon Kanehl, 35, of Marengo, and was charged with one count of obstructing a peace officer, one count of resisting a peace officer and one count of possession of cannabis by a driver.
“The investigation into the original call is ongoing and additional charges are being reviewed,” Kjellgren said.
Kanehl was cited and released with a notice to appear in court for an initial court hearing.
