Residents were left displaced after a fire broke out in the living area of their home, which left the residence uninhabitable near Lake Villa, fire officials said.
The Lake Villa Fire Protection District responded around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday to the 21600 block of West Birch Street in unincorporated Lake Villa for a report of a structure fire.
Lake Villa Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Kevin Johnson said crews arrived to find light smoke showing from the building.
A person was in the home when the fire started and called 911 to report it.
They safely evacuated prior to the fire department arriving at the scene, which is located in an area without fire hydrants, Johnson said.
The incident was upgraded to a Working Still Alarm to bring additional resources, including water tenders, to the scene as well as fire crews to cover Lake Villa fire stations.
Firefighters pulled a hose line and extinguished the fire within 30 minutes. They used approximately 600 gallons of water.
Johnson said the fire was contained to the living area on one floor but the residence sustained a lot of smoke and water damage.
No injuries were reported to any residents or firefighters and no pets were involved.
Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately an additional hour after extinguishing the fire to perform overhaul operations and ensure the fire was out, Johnson said.
The Antioch, Fox Lake, Gurnee, Newport and Round Lake fire departments assisted at the scene.
The Zion and Libertyville fire departments covered one of Lake Villa’s fire stations.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Lake Villa Fire Protection District.
