Wonder Lake Fire Chief Mike Weber will officially retire on Friday during a walkout ceremony following nearly 50 years of service to the department and community.

The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District said Weber began his career with the fire district on September 23, 1977, and has served for nearly five decades.

He was appointed as Fire Chief on January 29, 2019.

The district said he has since overseen significant advancements in firefighter training, emergency medical services, fire prevention initiatives and operational efficiency across the district.

“Chief Weber’s impact on this department and our community cannot be overstated,” the Wonder Lake Fire District Board of Trustees said.

“His involvement and community participation have shaped the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District into what it is today. We are forever grateful for his service,” they added.

Weber has been on the front lines of emergency responses, mentored generations of firefighters and worked to expand community outreach and public safety education.

The fire district said it has enhanced its capabilities through modernized equipment, advanced training programs and a focus on firefighter health and safety under Weber’s guidance.

“I have had the distinct honor of serving this department since 1977, beginning as a cadet, and growing alongside this district for nearly five decades,” Weber said.

“This firehouse is not just my workplace, it is my life’s work, my second family, and a critical piece of the community, which I have committed my heart and career to,” Weber added.

A formal walkout ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. on Friday at Wonder Lake Fire Station #1, 4300 East Wonder Lake Road in Wonder Lake.
