A woman allegedly stabbed her husband in the stomach with a kitchen knife, requiring him to be rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery, in McHenry Sunday afternoon.

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District and McHenry Police Department responded around 12:40 p.m. Sunday to the Fawn Ridge Apartment Homes in the 1900 block of North Orleans Street in McHenry for a report of a stabbing.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Samra Farooq, 30, of McHenry, used a kitchen knife to stab a man in the upper abdomen, causing a penetrating wound.

Court documents said Farooq and the victim, who is her husband, had been verbally arguing.

The victim was attempting to leave the home when Farooq threw his keys into the toilet, causing him to have to retrieve them.

Farooq approached the victim with a kitchen knife as he tried to leave again and then stabbed him in the abdomen, court documents said.

The victim tried to stop the bleeding, which was running down his stomach.

Court documents said the wound required emergency surgery and medical intervention. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Farooq, who is a traveling nurse, has a pending fourth-degree assault charge out of Washington.

She also has five prior encounters with the McHenry Police Department.

Farooq was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, a Class 3 felony, and domestic battery causing bodily harm, a Class A misdemeanor.

She was transported to the McHenry County Jail and the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain her pending trial.

McHenry County Judge Cynthia Lamb granted the petition during a detention hearing on Monday.

The judge noted that Farooq’s job as a nurse should make her even more aware of what a knife wound would do to the victim.

“There are no conditions or combination of conditions that can mitigate the threat this Defendant poses to a person, persons or the community,” Lamb said.

Farooq remains held in the McHenry County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court again on September 2 for a status of preliminary hearing.
