An investigation is underway after a fire broke out in a vacant unit of a strip mall and prompted the response of multiple fire departments in Buffalo Grove, officials said.

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department and Buffalo Grove Police Department responded around 6:30 p.m. Saturday to the area of 1300 West Dundee Road for a call of smoke in the area.

The first fire engine company arrived to find smoke coming from the rear of a vacant unit in a strip mall, fire officials said.

They immediately upgraded the incident to a working fire response to bring additional assistance to the scene, as well as fire department units to cover additional calls in the village.

Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack on the fire in the unit while searching for any possible victims.

Fire officials said no one was found in the unit. Additional firefighters searched the adjacent units to see if the fire had spread and found that the fire was confined to the vacant unit.

The fire was initially controlled by the working sprinkler system before being completely extinguished by firefighters.

The fire resulted in minimal damage to the vacant unit, which was being rehabbed at the time of the fire, fire officials said.

The Arlington Heights, Long Grove, Lincolnshire, Northbrook, Des Plaines and Palatine fire departments assisted at the scene.

It is unknown whether fire is considered suspicious in nature.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
