A police officer and a bicyclist were both hospitalized following separate crashes involving squad cars responding to emergency calls in Waukegan, officials said.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Craig Neal told Lake and McHenry County Scanner on Wednesday that a Waukegan police squad car was involved in a crash around 9 a.m. on August 9.

The collision involved a bicyclist and occurred near Wendy’s, 2005 North Lewis Avenue in Waukegan.

The officer was responding to a call for service when the crash occurred.

The adult bicyclist was transported by ambulance to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, Neal said.

The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and has since been treated and released from the hospital.

The Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County (MCAT) responded to investigate the crash.

Neal declined to release further information, citing the investigation being handled by the outside agency.

Less than a week later, a Waukegan Police Department squad car was involved in a crash around 3:30 p.m. on August 15.

The collision occurred in the area of Grand Avenue and New York Street.

The officer was traveling westbound on Grand Avenue responding to a call for service at the time of the incident, Neal said.

The officer had their emergency lights and siren activated. The officer drove around traffic into the eastbound lanes of Grand Avenue.

Neal said another driver made a left turn onto Grand Avenue from New York Street to travel eastbound, resulting in the crash.

The Waukegan Police Department Major Crash Scene Unit (MCSU) responded to investigate the crash.

The police officer involved was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Neal said. The officer has since been treated and released.

There were no injuries reported to the driver or passengers in the other vehicle involved.

The crash remains under investigation by the Waukegan Police Department MCSU.
