An alleged drunk driver was arrested after slamming into the rear of a police car that was stopped during a traffic stop in Riverwoods Sunday morning, police said.
Police were conducting a traffic stop around 12:30 a.m. Sunday in the area of Lake Cook Road and Portwine Road in Riverwoods.
Riverwoods Police Department Commander George Pfutzenreuter said a car traveling eastbound on Lake Cook Road rear-ended one of the squad cars.
The marked Riverwoods squad, which was stationary, was behind another squad car.
The Riverwoods officer was assisting another officer on a traffic stop involving a vehicle whose driver was being arrested for driving under the influence, Pfutzenreuter said.
The driver of the car that struck the squad was identified as Elizabeth S. Alanis, 29, of Chicago.
Alanis was determined to be driving under the influence of alcohol, Pfutzenreuter said.
No injuries were reported in the crash. No one was inside the squad car when it was hit.
The Cook County Sheriff’s Office arrested Alanis and she was charged with driving under the influence, improper passing of an emergency vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
She was processed, charged and released from custody, Pfutzenreuter said.
Alanis is scheduled to appear at the Cook County Courthouse in Skokie on October 7.
