A senior living facility in Woodstock is shutting its doors for good at the end of September, leaving about 117 workers out of a job.

Hearthstone Communities at 920 North Seminary Road in Woodstock is shutting down on September 30, according to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice posted on the state of Illinois website at illinoisworknet.com.

The facility plans to lay off a total of 117 staff members when the location shuts its doors. That number could be less by the time the layoffs take effect.

The notification was given to the state on August 5, within a state-required 60-day notification.

Heathstone Manor is still operating a website at hearthstonewoodstock.org, where a pop-up ad announces they are “thrilled to announce new pricing for our Independent Living Homes! Now, both our Garden and Prairie Home rentals are available for just $2500/month.”

Hearthstone Communities Campus Administrator Cynthia Palao Suarez sent a letter to the Village of Woodstock and State of Illinois earlier this month advising that Woodstock Christian Life Services, which operates as Hearthstone Communities, is closing the Hearthstone Manor Skilled Nursing Facility and Sheltered Care Memory Care.

The closure will also affect the neighboring Hearthstone Village at 920 North Seminary Avenue, Suarez said.

This action will impact the entire facility and is expected to be permanent, Suarez said.

This facility closure is the result of business circumstances that were not reasonably foreseeable, Suarez said.

Suarez said the company was trying to secure a buyer for the facility to prevent a shutdown, but that a potential buyer withdrew its bid at the last minute.

No other interested buyers have come forward, Suarez said, and the company had “no choice but to cease operations.”

On the website, the company claims the Hearthstone Communities campus operates as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization able to serve seniors at all levels.
