A teen who rescued a swimmer in distress in July was honored this week with a life-saving award from the village of Lincolnshire.

Jaydynn Britva, 13, of Buffalo Grove, received the Community Lifesaving Award at the Lincolnshire Village Board meeting on Monday after rescuing a 19-year-old swimmer at Spring Lake Beach on July 23.

This was the second time the 13-year-old had been honored for his act of courage in August.

Britva was recognized by U.S. Congressman Brad Schneider on August 19 for “his extraordinary courage in saving the life of the swimmer.”

“Jaydynn’s selfless and brave actions reflect the very best of our community,” Schneider said. “I am proud to commend his heroism and deeply grateful for the example he has set.”

The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District and Lincolnshire Police Department responded around 5:49 p.m. on July 23 for a medical emergency at Spring Lake Park, 49 Oxford Drive in Lincolnshire.

Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Tyler Reynolds said firefighters and paramedics arrived to find a person who had been struggling in the water had been removed by a bystander.

The victim was transported to Condell Medical Center, authorities said.

Lincolnshire Deputy Police Chief Kimberly Covelli said first responders were called to the shore and found the 19-year-old Lincolnshire man lying on a grassy area near the beach area of the park.

The man reported that he was swimming in the lake when he experienced a severe leg cramp and had difficulty staying afloat.

The swimmer was periodically submerging into the water as he tried to stay afloat and began yelling for help, Covelli said.

Authorities say the swimmer nearly went under, but was saved by Britva, who swam out and pulled the older teen from the water.

Britva happened to be walking by the area with his friends when he heard the cries for help and quickly acted, Covelli said.

Covelli said Britva jumped into the water and successfully rescued the 19-year-old man by bringing him to shore.

The police department lauded the younger teen on Facebook, saying they are extremely grateful for his heroic actions.

“At the August 25 Regular Village Board meeting, Jaydynn Britva received the Community Lifesaving Award for bravely rescuing a man struggling at Spring Lake Beach,” officials said. “Without hesitation, Jaydynn jumped into the water—an act of bravery that truly defines what it means to be a hero. Let’s give Jaydynn a huge round of applause!”
