The Lake Villa Police Department has added a four-legged friend to their ranks in an effort to better engage the community with calmness and compassion, officials said.

Charley, a black Labrador Retriever, has joined the police department as a specially trained comfort dog, officials said.

The arrival of Charley is designed to bring calmness, connection, and compassion to both officers and the Lake Villa community, officials said.

Charley was purchased from TOPS Kennel in Grayslake, a respected provider known for producing well-trained dogs, officials said.

Officials said Charley’s gentle temperament and calm demeanor made her a perfect fit for the department’s growing focus on wellness and community engagement.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Charley to the Lake Villa Police Department,” Lake Villa Police Chief Rochelle Tisinai said. “She brings a unique kind of support, and people can’t help but smile when she’s around. Charley will be a source of comfort and connection for our entire community.”

Lake Villa Police Officer John Baghdasarian will work as Charley’s handler and caregiver. Charley will live with Baghdasarian full-time to ensure a strong bond and consistent support on and off duty.

Charley was introduced at the Lake Villa Village Board meeting on Monday and was warmly welcomed by village officials.

Charley and Ofc. Baghdasarian has already visited a couple of local schools to help welcome students back for their first day.

Officials said her presence and wagging tail brought smiles to kids and staff alike, setting a positive tone for the new school year and reinforcing the department’s commitment to community connection.

Charley is expected to become a familiar face at community events, school visits, and public gatherings.

Charley’s arrival reflects a growing movement among police departments nationwide to incorporate comfort dogs into public safety work, officials said.
