A police officer was injured and residents were displaced after an overnight fire early Monday morning sent heavy flames out of a house in Mundelein, authorities said.
The Mundelein Fire Department and Mundelein Police Department responded around 3:18 a.m. Monday to the 500 block of Shady Lane in Mundelein for a report of a structure fire.
Firefighters were still responding when dispatchers reported there was an active fire at the rear of a single-family home, fire officials said.
Firefighters arrived within four minutes and found heavy flames coming from the rear of the structure.
Six people were home at the time of the fire and all of them were able to self-evacuate.
Fire officials said firefighters made an aggressive defensive attack by rapidly extinguishing a majority of the fire from the outside.
Firefighters then conducted an interior search on both floors of the home and extinguished the remaining fire.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to bring fire units to cover calls in Mundelein and for fire investigators to respond to the scene.
The fire was declared under control approximately 40 minutes after firefighters first arrived, fire officials said.
A Mundelein police officer was treated at the scene and released after suffering smoke inhalation.
No injuries were reported to any residents or firefighters. No pets were involved.
The Countryside, Libertyville, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Grayslake and Round Lake fire departments assisted at the scene.
The Gurnee, Inverness, Lake Forest, Deerfield and Lake Villa fire departments covered Mundelein fire stations during the incident.
The house sustained moderate damage, with the majority of the damage at the rear of the structure where the fire is believed to have originated.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation and the house was deemed uninhabitable.
The fire department said residents are reminded to check their homes for working smoke detectors and have plans for two ways to exit their homes in case of emergency.
