A woman, who was working as a private contractor, was left seriously injured after she suffered a laceration from an industrial lawnmower while mowing a yard in Wonder Lake.
The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District responded around 11:56 a.m. Tuesday to the 7000 block of Hiawatha Drive in Wonder Lake for a report of a traumatic injury call.
Wonder Lake Fire Chief Matthew Yegge said paramedics arrived and found a woman in her 60s with a laceration to her lower leg.
The woman was working as a private contractor mowing the lawn in the fenced backyard of a residence.
Yegge said she was riding on an industrial standing lawnmower when she suffered the wound.
No other workers were at the scene and neighbors came to the victim’s aid before paramedics arrived.
A tourniquet was applied to control the bleeding, Yegge said.
Emergency crews did not know the circumstances that led to the injury, which involved the lawnmower’s blade.
A medical helicopter was requested to respond due to the seriousness of her injuries.
Yegge said the closest helicopter was 30 minutes away and the request for a helicopter was canceled as paramedics were able to get her transported to the hospital quicker by ground.
The woman suffered serious injuries and was transported to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry.
It is unknown if she has since been transferred to another hospital for further treatment, Yegge said.
