A Crystal Lake man has been charged after dropping a firearm on a playground at South Elementary School after school was out for the day, police officials said.

Crystal Lake Police responded to a report that involved a firearm being located on the playground at South Elementary School at 601 Golf Road at about 3:50 p.m. on Sept. 2, authorities said.

The report came after school was no longer in session for the day, police said.

An investigation into the case showed George Kiska, 45, a valid concealed-carry license holder, dropped a firearm that was in his possession on the playground, police said.

That firearm was located by a child, who then notified their parent, police said.

Kiska was still present at the playground with his child and retrieved the firearm from an adult when notified, police said.

The investigation was reviewed by the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office and resulted in Kiska being cited for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in a School Zone, police said.

By law, firearms are not allowed to be carried into school zones or on public playgrounds.

Kiska has since been released from custody, police said.

His next court date is unknown at this time.
