A 4-year-old boy was injured in a Park City hit-and-run crash that involved a woman who was driving on a suspended license, authorities said.
Sanjuana Gayton-Nava was picked up by police at her home about 45 minutes after hitting the child in the 3500 block of Ted Avenue in Park City and leaving the scene, authorities said.
Park City Police Department was called to the scene at 8:03 p.m. on Sept. 3 after the child’s family called police to report the child was hit by a vehicle and the driver left the scene, prosecutors with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office said in court.
Video of the incident was reviewed by police, prosecutors said.
The video showed a car driven by Gayton-Nava was traveling westbound on Ted Avenue when the child tried to run across the street to his aunt’s house, authorities said.
As the child came out between two cars where Gayton-Nava hit the child with her car.
The child fell and was crying, and the uncle came over to assist, officials said.
Prosecutors said the video showed Gayton-Nava stopped the vehicle, got out, looked at the child, got back in the car, and drove off.
Prosecutors said the child was transported from the scene to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan with neck pain and redness and swelling on his right arm. His condition is unknown today.
The video led police to Gayton-Nava, and she was taken into custody about 45 minutes later, officials said.
Prosecutors said Gayton-Nava does not possess a valid license because she provided false information on a license application, prosecutors said in court.
Gayton-Nava is officially charged with a Class 2 felony for Failure to Report a Crash resulting in Injury, and a misdemeanor count of Driving on a Suspended License and Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.
Prosecutors attempted to file a motion to detain Gayton-Nava until trial. However, Lake County Judge James Simonian ruled the charges against Gayton-Nava don’t qualify for detention under the Illinois SAFE-T Act or Pretrial Fairness Act.
Instead, Gayton-Nava was ordered released with conditions that she not drive a vehicle without a valid driver’s license.
Gayton-Nava is due to return to court on Oct. 3.
