Firefighters assisted a resident out of a home after a fire broke out and sent flames out of the rear of an attached garage in Algonquin Monday evening, fire officials said.

The Huntley Fire Protection District and Algonquin Police Department responded around 6:45 p.m. Monday to the 500 block of Tenby Way in Algonquin for a report of a garbage can on fire.

Huntley Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Brian Harders said the call was quickly upgraded to a structure fire response while crews were responding.

A 911 caller reported the entire back of the house was on fire and an occupant was still inside the home.

Firefighters arrived on the scene four minutes later and found smoke and flames coming from the rear of an attached garage of a two-story residence.

Fire crews quickly deployed a hose line and extinguished the fire before it could extend into the living area, Harders said.

The damage was primarily confined to the back wall of the garage, Harders said. The house remains habitable.

An adult was still inside the home at the time of the fire and firefighters and police officers assisted them out safely.

No injuries were reported to any residents or emergency crews.

Police asked residents to avoid the area during the structure fire. “For everyone’s safety, we ask that you steer clear of the area and allow fire crews and officers the space they need to work.”

Harders said the fire department remained on the scene for approximately 90 minutes cleaning up and completing preliminary investigations.

The Algonquin, Crystal Lake, Pingree Grove and Marengo assisted the Huntley Fire Protection District during the incident.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Huntley Fire Protection District.
