McHenry County’s first 9/11 memorial stair climb was held in Woodstock with firefighters climbing 110 stories to honor the more than 340 FDNY firefighters who died.
The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District said it hosted the first McHenry County 9/11 memorial stair climb at the McHenry County Fairgrounds.
The event brought together first responders, their families and community members for a tribute to the heroes of September 11, 2001.
The stair climb tradition mirrors the 110 stories of the World Trade Center, representing the path taken by firefighters who responded with courage and determination that morning, Woodstock Fire/Rescue District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha said.
“Each step is symbolic of the sacrifice made by the 343 FDNY firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty,” Vucha said.
Many participants chose to wear their turnout gear or uniforms while others carried the names of the fallen, creating a “solemn and powerful atmosphere” throughout the event.
The inaugural climb in McHenry County reflects a nationwide movement supported by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
Stair climbs across the country serve not only as a physical challenge but also as a way to ensure that the bravery and dedication of those lost on September 11 are never forgotten, Vucha said.
The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District said it extends its gratitude to Tyler and Kate Webster, Tom Linneman, the McHenry County Fair Association and everyone else who played a role in organizing and supporting the event.
“Their efforts made it possible to bring this meaningful tribute to the community and create a lasting tradition of remembrance,” Vucha said.
