A man in his 60s died after he was involved in a three-vehicle crash where he left the scene before causing a second crash nearby in Waukegan Thursday morning.
The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 6:48 a.m. Thursday to the area of 10th Street and Sheridan Road in Waukegan for a vehicle crash.
The incident involved a three-vehicle crash and one of the vehicles left the scene, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.
The vehicle that left the scene was soon located crashed into a fire hydrant, causing the airbags to deploy, on Genesee Street between May Street and 8th Street.
Banek said the driver, Carlos Acosta, 63, of Waukegan, was transported by ambulance to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.
Acosta was pronounced dead in the emergency room.
An autopsy was performed on Acosta on Thursday and preliminary results indicate that he died from blunt force injuries to the neck.
Further autopsy results indicate Acosta also suffered a life-threatening cardiac event that likely led to the crash, Banek said.
