Multiple people were hospitalized, including at least one with serious injuries, after a car slammed into a building and caused serious damage, leaving residents displaced in North Chicago.
The North Chicago Police Department, North Chicago Fire Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 11:29 p.m. Tuesday to the 1800 block of Sheridan Road for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
A 911 caller reported a vehicle had struck a building, multiple injuries were reported and one person was possibly trapped in the car.
North Chicago Assistant Police Chief Gary Lunn said officers arrived and found a 2013 Scion passenger car had struck the apartment building south of 18th Street.
Three ambulances were requested to the scene to transport the injured occupants to the hospital.
The driver, a 27-year-old man, was operating the Scion northbound on Sheridan Road when it collided with the building, Lunn said.
There were two passengers in the car, a 21-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man.
Lunn said multiple occupants were transported to the hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening. One of them suffered a serious back injury.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was activated and responded to the scene to conduct a crash investigation.
There was significant damage to the building following the impact, Lunn said.
Several residents of the building were temporarily displaced until repairs can be made.
The North Chicago Building Department and a board-up company responded to the scene.
Lunn said investigators do not know what caused the crash yet and the incident remains under investigation by MCAT.
