Authorities say a man reported he blacked out before causing a rollover crash that left him injured and trapped in his car on Route 12 near Wauconda Wednesday morning.

The Wauconda Fire District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday to the area of Route 12 north of Old McHenry Road in unincorporated Wauconda for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Multiple 911 callers reported a car rolled over and it had smoke coming from it with a person trapped inside.

Firefighters arrived and confirmed the driver was entrapped in the vehicle. They worked to extricate him from the car.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said sheriff’s deputies arrived and spoke to the driver of the Hyundai Elantra, a 59-year-old Crystal Lake man.

The driver said he was traveling northbound on Route 12 when he “blacked out.”

His vehicle then veered off the roadway to the right, went down an embankment and struck the culvert.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and there were no passengers in the Hyundai.

The man was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Covelli said that since the driver reported losing consciousness while driving, the sheriff’s office will send notification to the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office to determine the status of his driver’s license.

“Generally, those who have a medical episode while driving, causing a crash, have to provide physician support to the Secretary of State that they are able to drive,” Covelli said.
