Felony charges have been filed against a suspect who was taken into custody after he broke into an occupied home in Algonquin, stole a truck and was chased down by a resident Thursday morning.
The Algonquin Police Department responded around 7:50 a.m. Thursday to a residence in the 100 block of Hayes Road for a report of a residential burglary and motor vehicle theft.
Algonquin Deputy Police Chief Ryan Markham said responding officers learned that the resident had been awoken by a male suspect, later identified as Alfonso Garcia-Juache, 25, of Elgin.
The suspect had entered the resident’s home through an unlocked sliding door.
Garcia-Juache began rummaging through cabinets and drawers before locating a set of car keys from the kitchen table, Markham said.
The resident discovered that the fleeing offender had used the keys to steal his 2013 Ford F-150.
Around the same time, a person attempted to force entry into another residence in the 1200 block of Fox River Drive but it is unclear yet whether the same suspect was involved, Markham said.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched around 10:30 a.m. to the 12000 block of Kingston Place in unincorporated Algonquin for a report of a theft of items from a backyard.
Surveillance video also captured the suspect, who was wearing women’s clothing and a wig, attempting to enter the home but the doors were locked.
Garcia-Juache fled the scene and was pursued by neighbors to the area of Gaslight Drive and Springhill Drive in Algonquin, Markham said.
Members of the Algonquin Police Department and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area.
The Algonquin Police Department said in an alert that residents in the area were asked to remain in their homes due to the “ongoing incident.”
Officers located the Ford F-150 that had been stolen from the residence on Hayes Road parked nearby.
Markham said Garcia-Juache was located lying in the bushes behind a residence in the 1200 block of Springhill Drive following a search of the area.
The man was found to be going in and out of consciousness and appeared to be suffering from an unknown medical emergency.
Garcia-Juache was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley for treatment.
Court records show an arrest warrant was obtained for Garcia-Juache charging him with residential burglary, attempted possession of a stolen vehicle, criminal damage to property and theft.
He was released from the hospital and transported to the McHenry County Jail.
The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain him pending trial, arguing he poses a real and present danger to the community.
Garcia-Juache appeared for an Initial Appearance Court hearing on Saturday morning.
McHenry County Judge Altman denied the petition and allowed Garcia-Juache to be released with pre-trial conditions.
He is scheduled to appear in court again on October 15 for a status of preliminary hearing.
