Part of Route 14, also known as Northwest Highway, will experience a full closure in Barrington starting on Monday and lasting approximately a month as part of construction for the underpass project.
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced a full closure of Route 14 from north of Valencia Road to Route 59, also known as Hough Street, will be in place in Barrington.
The closure will last approximately four weeks and is set to begin on Monday.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through the area.
Drivers are urged to pay close attention to detour signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
The work is part of the Route 14 underpass project, which creates an underpass with a grade separation at Route 14 under the CN railroad in Barrington.
The CN Railway acquired the EJ&E Railway in 2008 to serve as a bypass around Chicago. The volume and length of freight trains on the rail line have increased significantly as a result.
The rail line crosses three important arterial routes within the village and traffic studies showed considerable impacts to vehicle traffic and emergency response times, especially during peak commuter hours.
The temporary closure on Monday will allow Canadian National Railway to complete temporary railroad tracks and shift train traffic.
After train traffic is shifted, the temporary roadway, which has been mostly completed over the past month, can be fully completed across the existing rail track.
Route 14 will reopen to full four-lane traffic on the temporary roadway once the railroad work is completed and the gap in the temporary roadway is constructed.
Detour routes will be marked with signage along Hough Street and Main Street starting Monday morning.
All local businesses, including the Barrington Area Library, will remain open and accessible during the closure. Shorely Drive local access will also be maintained for residents.
