Fire officials say a man was seriously injured and had to be flown to the hospital after crashing a mini bike into a fence on a residential property near Marengo Sunday afternoon.

The Harvard Fire Protection District responded around 1:35 p.m. Sunday to the 19800 block of Bauman Road in unincorporated Marengo for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Harvard Fire Protection District Fire Chief John Kimmel said the incident involved a mini bike hitting a wire fence.

The crash happened in the rear of the residence in a grassy field area.

The driver, a male in his late 50s, was in serious condition and had an altered level of consciousness, Kimmel said.

Several people, including family and friends, were at the scene and called 911 to report the incident.

A Mercyhealth REACT medical helicopter was requested and landed at the scene in a field.

Mercyhealth MD-1, which is a mobile field response physician, was also dispatched to the scene.

Kimmel said MD-1 was canceled due to the medical helicopter already being in the air at the time, leading to a very quick response.

The victim was transferred to the flight crew and flown to Mercyhealth Javon Bea Hospital — Riverside in Rockford for treatment.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
