An investigation is underway after a fire broke out and sent flames out the window of a large home in Kildeer while the residents were gone, leaving the home uninhabitable.
The Long Grove Fire Protection District and Kildeer Police Department responded around 1:05 p.m. Sunday to the 20500 block of North Weatherstone Road in Kildeer.
Long Grove Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Kevin Biedzycki said crews initially were responding after receiving an automated fire alarm from the residence.
A neighbor called 911 to report they saw flames coming from the home, prompting the incident to be upgraded.
Firefighters arrived and found flames showing from the first floor of the front of the large two-story house, Biedzycki said.
The fire was coming from inside the front door and originated in a small closet.
Biedzycki said the flames were blowing out the first-floor window with exposure to the second floor.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within 5-10 minutes before the fire was able to spread to the second floor.
No injuries were reported. No pets were inside the home and the residents were not home at the time of the fire.
The area does not have fire hydrants and firefighters were able to extinguish the fire with just their tank water, Biedzycki said.
The house was left uninhabitable due to smoke damage on both floors, leaving two residents displaced.
The Buffalo Grove, Palatine, Lake Zurich, Arlington Heights, Deerfield, Schaumburg, Prospect Heights, Palatine Rural and Countryside fire departments responded to assist.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the box alarm level to bring a large number of fire investigators from throughout the area to the scene.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation and fire officials did not say whether the fire was suspicious in nature or not.
