A woman was transported to the hospital after being freed from her rolled-over car following a hit-and-run crash near McHenry that also led to a firefighter being injured.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 3:30 p.m. Saturday to the area of Spring Grove Road and Miller Road in unincorporated McHenry.
McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Communication Specialist Emily Matusek-Baker said deputies arrived to find a crash involving three vehicles that happened in the intersection.
A 2019 Chevrolet Trax was traveling northbound on Spring Grove Road nearing Miller Road.
An unidentified vehicle, which did not remain at the scene of the crash, had been driving westbound on Miller Road, Matusek-Baker said.
The unidentified vehicle crashed into the Chevrolet and caused the vehicle to strike a 1993 Pontiac Firebird Formula.
The Chevrolet rolled over onto its roof off the roadway upon impact.
Witnesses said the unidentified vehicle, possibly a red SUV, fled the scene of the crash and has not been located.
The driver of the Chevrolet, a 55-year-old Richmond woman, was still inside the car when firefighters arrived, according to McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief David Harwood.
Harwood said the woman was not trapped in the wreckage but was still in her seatbelt and needed assistance from the car.
A medical helicopter was initially placed on standby but later canceled after it was determined not to be needed.
The woman was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry.
Matusek-Baker said the driver of the Pontiac, a 50-year-old McHenry man, and his sole passenger, a 51-year-old McHenry woman, were both uninjured.
A responding firefighter at the scene fell into a four-foot deep hole in the grassy area that was not visible, Harwood said.
The firefighter suffered a lower leg, possibly an ankle injury, and had to be transported to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry by ambulance.
No citations or charges have been issued. The crash remains under investigation and anyone with information on the hit-and-run vehicle is asked to contact the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
