The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is disputing “inaccurate information” circulating online claiming that the agency signed an agreement with ICE to allow them to arrest immigrants.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday they were made aware of inaccurate information circulating on social media regarding the sheriff’s office and ICE.
A social media post garnered hundreds of shares from a person with the title “Heads up Lake County.”
“The Sheriff’s Office just signed agreements with ICE. Deputies can now turn people over to ICE during stops if there’s already a detainer, and jail staff can hold people up to 48 hrs for ICE pickup,” the post said.
“They said no random raids, but still be aware and know your rights. Do not dismiss this or let others tell you it’s nothing to worry about. This is only the beginning,” the post said.
Sheriff’s officials said Illinois law prohibits local law enforcement from holding individuals on ICE detainers or coordinating with ICE on immigration enforcement.
The sheriff’s office said they have not signed any agreements with ICE.
“Our mission remains focused on public safety and serving all members of our community with fairness and respect,” the agency said.
“If you ever have questions about our policies, please refer to our official channels for accurate information,” they added.
Earlier this week, city officials issued a warning to residents saying that there are confirmed ongoing operations involving ICE agents arresting people in Waukegan.
The City of Waukegan said Monday that it has confirmed reports of “ongoing operations” by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) within the city.
“You are encouraged to know your rights and be aware of misinformation. Inform yourself through trusted sources,” the city’s statement said.
The city said officers with the Waukegan Police Department do not conceal their identity and will continue to be clearly identifiable while on duty by wearing official uniforms with badges.
Approximately 200-300 ICE agents were deployed earlier this month to the Chicago area as part of a surge operation by President Donald Trump.
