A report of a possible bomb outside of a church in Antioch prompted a police response but turned out to be a battery pack Thursday evening, authorities said.
The Antioch Police Department responded around 5:30 p.m. Thursday to Our Lady of the Lakes St. Peter Catholic Church, 557 Lake Street in Antioch, for a suspicious device.
Police officials said a suspicious article was reported on the sidewalk outside of the church.
The item appeared concerning due to exposed wires, which “understandably caused callers to fear it may have been an explosive device.”
Officers immediately implemented their response protocols and secured the area to ensure public safety out of an abundance of caution, police said.
A thorough investigation determined the item was a damaged lithium-ion battery pack, which had exposed wires from the case as a result of the damage.
“We would like to thank our community for promptly reporting this concern. Your vigilance plays a vital role in keeping Antioch safe,” the police department said.
“Please know that we will always respond expeditiously, professionally, and with full commitment to protecting you!” the department added.
