No injuries were reported after a large machine at a manufacturing plant for plastic injection molding caught on fire and filled the building with smoke near Lake Forest.
The Libertyville Fire Department responded around 9:43 p.m. Tuesday to the 28468 North Ballard Drive in unincorporated Lake Forest for a report of a fire alarm activated.
Libertyville Fire Chief Michael Pakosta said firefighters arrived and found smoke coming from the building.
The business, International Precision Components Corporation, specializes in injection molding plastic products, such as industrial packaging, dairy crates, storage containers and bakery trays.
The company uses mid-to-large tonnage injection molding presses to manufacture its products.
They upgraded the incident to a Confirmed Fire response to bring additional resources to the scene, Pakosta said.
Fire crews found that a plastic mold injection machine caught on fire inside the building for an unknown reason.
The fire caused smoke to fill the building and the sprinkler system activated, which helped control the fire, Pakosta said.
Firefighters opened the machine and used a hose line to fully extinguish the fire.
The fire was contained to the machine and crews remained on the scene for approximately an hour evacuating the smoke, shutting down the sprinkler system and performing other tasks.
Pakosta said the building remained occupiable and the employees were allowed to re-enter after the fire department left.
The Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, Mundelein, Countryside and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods fire departments responded to the scene to assist.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Libertyville Fire Department.
