Authorities say they are investigating after a suspect robbed a retail store of cash and fled on foot, prompting a search effort, in Gurnee Thursday afternoon.
The Gurnee Police Department responded around 4:10 p.m. Thursday to the 7500 block of Grand Avenue for a report of an unarmed robbery.
The offender entered a retail business and initially pretended to make a purchase, according to Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor.
The employee opened the cash register during the transaction, at which time the offender quickly reached across the counter.
Gaylor said the suspect, described as a black male wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and a blue baseball cap, stole money from the register.
The offender fled the area on foot, prompting a search of the nearby neighborhood.
The Gurnee Police Department’s Canine Unit was deployed to assist but the offender was not located following multiple efforts to locate him, Gaylor said.
No injuries were reported during the robbery and the offender did not display any weapons.
Bystanders reported seeing the police activity at the Walgreens but police officials declined to provide the business name or exact location of the robbery.
No surveillance photos or videos have been released yet. The case remains under investigation by the Gurnee Police Department.
