One person was hospitalized after an occupied Amtrak train crashed into construction machinery near a Metra station in Lake Forest Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

The Lake Forest Fire Department and Lake Forest Police Department responded around 12:04 p.m. Sunday to the area of Everett Road and Waukegan Road for a report of a train crash.

Fire crews arrived on the scene and found a crash involving a front loader and an Amtrak train.

The crash occurred just north of the Everett Road crossing near the Metra station, police said.

The heavy equipment machinery sustained damage to the right rear from being struck by the train.

The train also sustained visible damage to the front of the locomotive.

Officers at the scene reported that the railroad tracks sustained damage during the incident.

Police said the front-end loader had been struck by a southbound Amtrak train that was heading to Chicago.

The front-end loader was performing maintenance on the track at the time of the collision.

The construction equipment operator was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Lake Forest with non-life-threatening injuries.

All train traffic was stopped on the Milwaukee District North line, police said. Vehicle traffic in the area was unaffected.

Investigators from Lake Forest, Amtrak, Metra and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Southern (CPKC) Railroad are processing the scene and working to clear the crash site.
