Residents were left displaced and a cat died after a fire engulfed a garage attached to a house in Highland Park early Monday morning, fire officials said.
The Highland Park Fire Department responded around 3:03 a.m. Monday to the 80 block of Acorn Lane in Highland Park for a report of a structure fire.
Police officers arrived and reported finding a fully engulfed garage fire, according to Highland Park Fire Chief Joe Schrage.
The incident was dispatched as a Confirmed Fire response, which brought multiple fire departments to assist.
Schrage said Highland Park firefighters were already on two other emergency calls at the time the fire was dispatched.
Northbrook firefighters arrived first and confirmed an active fire in the garage, which was attached to a single-family, two-story home.
The residents, two older adults, were able to escape on their own, Schrage said.
One of the residents was able to move their car out of the one-car garage before the fire grew further.
Firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control before it was able to spread into the living area of the house.
Schrage said the fire only briefly spread to the attic of the house, which was deemed temporarily uninhabitable until power is restored and some repairs are made.
The two residents living at the home have been displaced and sought alternative living arrangements.
No injuries were reported to any residents or firefighters. A cat inside the home did not escape and died in the blaze, Schrage said.
The Northfield, Countryside, Winnetka, Buffalo Grove, Northbrook, Lake Forest, Lincolnshire, Deerfield and Glencoe fire departments responded to the scene or covered Highland Park fire stations during the incident.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Highland Park Fire Department.
