Two people were hospitalized after a semi-truck rolled over, trapping the driver inside and spilling gravel all over the roadway, along Route 176 in Crystal Lake Wednesday morning.
The Crystal Lake Police Department, McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Crystal Lake Fire/Rescue Department responded around 7:24 a.m. Wednesday to the area of Route 176 and Haligus Road for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Richard Neumann said officers arrived and found a two-vehicle crash.
The crash involved a white sedan, which sustained heavy front-end damage, and a semi-truck hauling a dump trailer.
The semi-truck rolled over onto its side and came to rest off the roadway.
Neumann said a preliminary investigation showed the semi-truck was traveling eastbound on Route 176 through the intersection at Haligus Road.
The semi-truck collided with the sedan, which was traveling northbound.
Firefighters had to work to extricate the trapped driver from the semi-truck cab. The process took approximately 20 minutes.
A medical helicopter was placed on standby but one was not available nearby and the next closest helicopter was ultimately canceled.
Both drivers were transported to the hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries, Neumann said.
The semi-truck spilled its load of gravel all over Route 176 after it rolled over.
Whitey’s Towing responded to the scene to upright and remove the truck as well as clean the roadway.
Officers shut down Route 176 between Briarwood Road and Haligus Road during the incident. It was reopened around 10:40 a.m.
Neumann said the driver of the semi-truck, a resident of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, was cited for disregarding a traffic control device.
The incident remains under investigation by the Crystal Lake Police Department.
