Authorities say a convicted felon, who was on pre-trial release, was arrested after he pointed a gun at a victim and pistol-whipped him in the head in Lake Zurich Tuesday.

The Lake Zurich Police Department responded around 7:04 a.m. Tuesday to the 200 block of South Buesching Road for a report of an unwanted subject call.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Savannah Halcomb said multiple 911 calls were received for a man with a gun in the parking lot of the apartment complex.

Halcomb said a witness reported seeing Michael Ramos, 41, of South Elgin, going into the parking lot with the female victim.

The female victim has an active order of protection against Ramos and they were previously in a relationship.

The witness saw Ramos pull out a firearm and put it to his head, Halcomb said, adding that he made a statement that if he could not be with her or their kids, he would rather be dead.

The witness exited the building to come to the aid of the woman but Ramos then pointed the gun at the male witness.

Lake Zurich Deputy Police Chief Colin Gaffney said Ramos struck the victim in the head multiple times with the gun.

The victim was transported to the hospital due to his injuries.

Gaffney said Ramos fled the scene prior to police arrival and officers began searching for him.

They located Ramos approximately a mile away near West Main Street and Route 22 and took him into custody.

Halcomb said officers spotted a vehicle driven by Ramos and he gave consent for a search.

Officers found a live round of ammunition in the trunk of the car. Ramos is a convicted felon from a prior burglary case out of Cook County, Halcomb said.

At the time of his arrest, Ramos was on pre-trial release for violating the order of protection involving the female who was involved in the Tuesday incident.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, aggravated assault and violation of pre-trial release conditions.

Ramos was held at the Lake Zurich Police Department and transported to First Appearance Court in Waukegan on Wednesday morning.

The state’s attorney’s office filed a petition to detain Ramos pending trial and a detention hearing was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
