A juvenile suspect is in custody after police say he shot a 19-year-old woman while the two were inside a vehicle in Round Lake Beach Tuesday evening.
The Round Lake Beach Police Department and Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded around 10:09 p.m. Tuesday to the 900 block of North Clarendon Drive for a report of a shooting.
Officers arrived and found a 19-year-old woman suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, police officials said.
An adult male was also at the scene attempting to render aid to the woman, who was found down in the street.
An investigation showed that the shooting occurred while the victim and a 17-year-old male were inside a vehicle on the residential street.
An ambulance transported the victim to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment.
Her condition was not released but police officials said her injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The 17-year-old male, who was an acquaintance of the victim, was responsible for the shooting and fled the area on foot before officers arrived, police officials said.
Officers eventually located the juvenile suspect and took him into custody.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Canine Simba and Deputy Sinceno responded to the scene to aid in the search for the gun involved.
Simba, within minutes, led his handler directly to a firearm found dumped in a yard.
“Thanks to K9 Simba’s skills and training, the weapon was safely recovered before it could be hidden, picked up by a passerby, or worse found by a child,” the sheriff’s office said.
“K9 Simba’s actions helped ensure the safety of the community and aided in the ongoing investigation. Great work, K9 Simba and Deputy Sinceno!” the sheriff’s office added.
The boy has been petitioned to juvenile court on charges of aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.
He was transported to the Robert W. Depke Juvenile Complex Center in Vernon Hills where he remains held.
Police have not released the circumstances that led to the shooting.
“This was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the community,” police officials said.
Police also said they could not release the suspect’s identity in accordance with Illinois law, due to him being a juvenile.
