The sheriff says a 19-year-old man was injured and later cited after driving into oncoming traffic and striking two semi trucks on Route 20 near Marengo.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Huntley Fire Protection District responded around 6 a.m. on September 17 to the area of Route 20 near Getty Road in unincorporated Marengo for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found a three-vehicle crash that was blocking Route 20.
McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Communication Specialist Emily Matusek-Baker said Friday that a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta was traveling northwest on Route 20.
The Volkswagen, driven by a 19-year-old Hampshire man, crossed the center line for unknown reasons.
The Volkswagen struck the trailer of a southeast-bound 2024 Etnyre semi truck, Matusek-Baker said.
The Volkswagen continued forward and struck the trailer of a 2006 Mack semi truck.
The Volkswagen came to rest just off the roadway and the driver was found down on the ground next to the car when emergency crews arrived.
An initial report of entrapment in one of the vehicles was unfounded. Route 20 was briefly shut down during the incident.
Matusek-Baker said the driver of the Volkswagen was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley with minor injuries.
The drivers of both semi trucks were the sole occupants of their vehicles and reported no injuries.
A witness to the crash said they called 911 and were directly behind one of the semi-trucks involved. The witness said her husband was able to stop the car in time to avoid becoming involved.
The driver of the Volkswagen was cited for improper lane usage and operating an uninsured motor vehicle, Matusek-Baker said.
