A woman was seriously injured and had to be flown to the hospital after an SUV pulled out in front of another car, causing a crash that shut down Route 173 near Hebron, the sheriff said.
The Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 3:52 p.m. on September 19 to the area of Route 173 and Johnson Road in unincorporated Hebron for a vehicle crash.
Fire crews arrived and reported two vehicles involved with moderate to heavy damage.
Two ambulances, including one from the Harvard Fire Protection District, were dispatched to the scene.
A LifeNet medical helicopter was also requested to respond and land nearby.
McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Katie Wendt said an investigation showed a 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling southbound on Johnson Road.
A 2017 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling westbound on Route 173.
Northbound and southbound traffic on Johnson Road has a stop sign at Route 173.
Traffic on westbound and eastbound Route 173 does not have a traffic control device.
The Hyundai, driven by a 79-year-old Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, woman, entered the intersection, causing a collision with the Chevrolet, Wendt said.
The driver of the Hyundai was transported to Mercyhealth Hospital and Medical Center in Harvard with minor injuries.
Wendt said the driver of the Chevrolet, a 32-year-old Harvard woman, suffered serious injuries.
The medical helicopter landed at the Hebron fire station along Route 173 and an ambulance transported her to the landing zone.
She was transferred to the helicopter flight crew and flown to Mercyhealth Javon Bea Hospital — Riverside in Rockford.
Deputies cited the driver of the Hyundai for failure to yield at a stop intersection, Wendt said.
Route 173 from Kennedy Road to Fink Road was shut down for approximately an hour and a half during the incident.
