Residents were left displaced after a fire broke out and sent flames from a house, leaving it uninhabitable, in Gurnee Saturday evening, fire officials said.
The Gurnee Fire Department and Gurnee Police Department responded around 6 p.m. Saturday to the 600 block of Dunham Road in Gurnee for a report of a house fire.
A person walking past saw the house on fire and called 911, Gurnee Fire Department Lt. Joe Olsen said.
Firefighters arrived and found smoke and fire coming from the two-story house.
The fire appeared to have started from an office on the second floor, Olsen said.
Crews immediately began fire suppression and search operations.
“They pulled multiple lines into the structure and used class A foam to mitigate and knock the fire down quickly,” Olsen said.
The fire appeared to have started from an office on the second floor of the home.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze in about an hour.
No one was home at the time and there were no injuries, Olsen said.
Both the inside and outside of the home were damaged, with more of the damage on the second floor.
The house is deemed uninhabitable, Olsen said.
During the incident, a car drove over a fire hose that was laid on Dunham Road near Dixon Court.
The car driving over the hose caused “minor complications,” Olsen said, but fire operations remained unaffected and no one was injured.
The Gurnee police officers who were at the scene immediately responded and spoke to the driver who ran over the hose.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation and a damage estimate was not immediately available.
The Grayslake and Newport Township fire departments assisted at the scene.
The HeatherRidge Security Department assisted police with traffic control, shutting down Dunham Road between Colby Road and White Court.
The Gurnee Fire Department became inundated with several other calls for service in the village during the fire.
“Simultaneously, we had multiple other rescue calls going on,” Olsen said.
The Lake Villa, Waukegan, Mundelein, Libertyville and Newport Township fire departments, in addition to numerous Gurnee ambulances, responded to the other calls.
Fire officials reminded residents to check their smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors and to have their chimneys inspected and maintained.
“We’re coming up to that time of the year,” Olsen said.
